Evaluation

Assessment may include examination, thyroid ultrasound, blood tests and fine-needle aspiration. These findings help clarify the diagnosis and guide further evaluation.

Role and extent of surgery

The type and extent of thyroid cancer influence whether surgery is appropriate and whether part or all of the thyroid is removed. The benefits, risks and alternatives should be discussed individually.

Lymph-node assessment

Neck lymph nodes may be assessed during evaluation. Whether lymph-node surgery is needed depends on the findings and cancer type.

Multidisciplinary and adjuvant care

Planning may involve surgical, endocrine and other oncology specialists. Additional treatment, such as radioactive iodine in selected settings, depends on the diagnosis and postoperative findings.

Follow-up

Follow-up is tailored to the cancer type and treatment. It may include clinical review, blood tests and imaging, with attention to thyroid hormone needs and possible recurrence.
